warning signs of breast cancer [dont panic, just see a doctor ... a lot of the time, tumors are benign (non cancerous)]:
•Lump, hard knot or thickening
•Swelling, warmth, redness or darkening
•Change in the size or shape of the breast
•Dimpling or puckering of the skin
•Itchy, scaly sore or rash on the nipple
•Pulling in of your nipple or other parts of the breast
•Nipple discharge that starts suddenly
•New pain in one spot that doesn’t go away
•Lump, hard knot or thickening

The Truth
If you discover a persistent lump in your breast or any changes in breast tissue, it is very important that you see a physician immediately. However, 8 out of 10 breast lumps are benign, or not cancerous. Sometimes women stay away from medical care because they fear what they might find. Take charge of your health by performing routine breast self-exams, establishing ongoing communication with your doctor, and scheduling regular mammograms.

There is no sure way to prevent breast cancer. Some healthy lifestyle choices, however, may help lower your risk and have the added bonus of cutting your risk of heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer and osteoporosis. Everyone should try to:
•Be physically active.
•Maintain a healthy weight.
•Cut down on "bad" fats (saturated and trans fats) and consume more "good" fats (polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, like olive and canola oil).
•Take a daily multivitamin with folic acid (often called "folate" on nutrition labels).
•If you drink, limit alcohol intake (to less than one alcoholic drink a day for women and fewer than two drinks a day for men). Those who drink alcohol should try to get enough folic acid, either through a multivitamin or food sources like oranges, orange juice, green leafy vegetables and fortified breakfast cereals.
•If possible, choose to breastfeed children.

Many studies support a link between alcohol intake and an increased risk of breast cancer. One analysis pooling the data from 53 studies found that for every one alcoholic drink consumed per day, the relative risk of breast cancer increased by about seven percent (a 1.07-fold increase in risk). Overall, women who drink two to three alcoholic beverages per day have a 20 percent greater risk of breast cancer (a 1.2-fold increase in risk) than non-drinkers.
Alcohol may increase the risk of breast cancer in a number of ways. It can alter the way a woman's body metabolizes estrogen, causing blood estrogen levels to rise, which may in turn increase the risk of breast cancer. Drinking alcohol can also reduce blood levels of the vitamin folic acid. Folic acid plays a role in DNA synthesis and repair. Low levels of the vitamin may make it more likely that DNA is incorrectly copied when cells normally divide. Such errors can lead cells down a pathway to become cancerous.

Every year, i would do the Revlon Women's cancers run/walk of Los Angeles .
This marathon is so inspiring . Thousands of people gather around USC for celebrity speakers, vendors and food. You will see women who have just been diagnosed to women who are 30 yr survivors !! Most importantly, you will see all of the family and friends who walk to support a woman with cancer ... or walk in memory of one .

Although rare, younger women can also get breast cancer. Just five percent of all breast cancers occur in women under age 40 [17]. Women who are diagnosed with breast cancer at younger ages may have a BRCA1 or BRCA2 genetic mutation. These genes are important in the development of breast cancer. Women who carry defects on either of these genes are at greater risk of breast and ovarian cancer. For BRCA1 carriers, the chance of getting breast cancer ranges from 60 to 90 percent. And for BRCA2 carriers, estimates range from 30 to 85 percent [18-22]. So while the risk of breast cancer is generally much lower for younger women, there is still a high risk for some.

Everyone thinks that breast cancer cannot happen to them . Let me tell you, it can and it is more common than you think .
